SUMMER!

I love running all the time, but summertime mornings are most likely my favorite.  It gets humid in SC, but the mornings before sunrise is usually such a warm but purely inspiring time to run.  I just got back from one of the best trips of my life to the Carribbean with my wonderful husband David.  The island reminded me a lot of running in Costa Rica....the weather....the HILLS....the beach speedwork.  We did a few speedwork sessions barefoot on the beach, and wat a great way to train your legs.  Running barefoot on grass and the road/trails works random muscles you don't even know existed in your legs, as does the sand!  We did a session of running all the way down the beach (maybe 1/2 mile) at slow easy pace, and turned around at where beach ended and sprinted (as fast as you can on midfoot in sand) for 30 seconds, followed by 30 seconds recovery until we reached the other end, then recovery run back to turn around for "Fartlek" oceanside repeats.  We gradually increased the sprint, recovery to 45 seconds and then 1 minute sprint, recover, followed by all out sprint at the end.  Summertime provides ample opportunites (especially while on vacation) to run on terrains and inclines that your body is not used to, thus leading to increased speed and fitness.  This morning I implemented the same speedwork session on a fairly flat long stretch of road about the length of the beach segment we had at Cinnamon Bay.  This was a Hanson-Brooks 6 mile speedwork training run, thus was a bit longer than the beach 30 minute blissful session, but in my mind I simulated feet in the sand, the ocean waves rolling across our feet and just felt great throughout the whole workout.  Its funny how with running  can take your mind to another place, a better time, a worse time.  Today (David is back on night shift) I was running alone, but in my mind his footsteps were in the sand right in front of me, pounding out heated speedwork with the nice resistance of Mother Nature (not the asphalt) under our feet. Very powerful force that the mind and body working simultaneously for a runner are....  Until later...gotta run!

Happy summer. :) :)
